  3. Make your Pennant (see our various guides and videos on Youtube)
  4. Add your details to a label and fix to the back of the Pennant
  5. Display / Exhibit / Photograph and upload to Gallery
  6. Send into us at the Project address so we can display at exhibitions and distribute to competing athletes

Make Braids

To include even more people in our project we would like Braid makers to help us with the braids/cords to hang these pennants.

They can be flat or round braids from 3mm to 7mm in thickness and 60 - 70cm long (24" - 28"), some will be tied and some rods will have holes in them for the braid to pass through. The braids can also be finished with tassel ends if desired, but this would be in addition to the main length.

Please attach a small swing ticket type label with your name and general location on. Please also include your full contact details (email if possible) with the braids for our records, we will not pass this on.

Braids can be posted or taken to one of our collection points or coordinators, there is a full list on our website.

Make Rods

Calling all Wood Turners and Wood Workers

You can also contribute by making rods to go through the hanging sleeves on the pennants.

We need rods either 13" or 17" long so they protrude clear of the ends of the sleeves so we can attach the braids. The ends can have a finial/ball end or we are open to your own creativity.

The rods should be approximately 1/2" in diameter (they can be a little larger but no smaller please). Native woods would be prefered but all wood should be sustainably sourced - alternative you can re-use wood from other projects or reclaimed items such as broken broom handles etc.

Please attach a small swing ticket type label with your name and general location on. Please also include your full contact details (email if possible) with the rods for our records, we will not pass this on.

Rods can be posted or taken to one of our collection points or coordinators, there is a full list on our website.

Promote the Project

Although you might not feel able to be invoved by maiking Pennants, Braids or Rods, you can still be of enormous help to us by supporting in other ways.

The Project relies entirely on volunteer resources and the seemingly endless generouscity of people who give their time (and money) freely to see the Project grow and expand. Teaching new and traditional skills to all abilities, organising events, workshops, fundraising, venues, networking or making endless cups of tea!

You can help us to help as many people as possible fto enjoy the excitement of discovering new skills and being involved in one of the biggest events in the sporting and cultural calendar. We've listed some ideas below but please contact us if you have any more ideas and let us know what you're up to with photos and articles.

  • Support - the easiest way to do this is tell everyone you know about us. Post links to our site in blogs, emails and anywhere else you come into contact with people who might be interested for themseleves or willing to pass it on. We need 14,000 pennants so the more the merrier!
  • Spread the word in local businesses (often groups of workers will get support from employers to take part) and community projects. This is an ideal group activity and doesnt need a lot of investment for a huge amount of return.
  • Help at a workshop or local event - contact one of our local coordinators and go along to help. We always need an extra pair of hands and you dont need to be skilled in sewing or textiles to make a real difference.
  • Write to MP/Council to get them involved - we already have the support of a number of MPs but Government and Local Council support is sparse and patchy. We need anythign from funds to locations for exhibitions to contacts and publicity so if you know anyone then please contact them and get them to support us.
  • Print off the Education Pack and take it to your local schools - email the link to our page if its easy or quicker. Mkae sure they realise how easy it is and how many schools have already taken part and continue to make pennants as part of coursework, learning and after-school clubs.
  • Fundraising - we desperately need funding for the admin side as well as materials, venue hire etc we have no income to cover postage, travel expenses, refreshments, stationery or the web site. we have only received one small local grant so far (despite numerous applications) and this can only be used for specific workshops and equipment. Anything you can help with in the direction would be gratefully received. Please note that we cannot consider commercial sponsorship or endorsement.

If you have any more ideas or what to find out more please contact us or any of our coordinators for more information. Thank you for your support.
