Using the Games Branding

Important information on using the Games branding, images and wording.

Is there any restriction on what images or words I can use on my pennant?

Unfortunately, there are some very strict rules on what can and can't be used on the Pennants as they are deemed to be 'products' - despite the fact that they are gifts and are not to be sold or used for commercial purposes.

Please Do NOT use any of the following on your pennants

· The London 2012 Logo
· The Olympic Rings
· The Pictograms (symbols for each sport)
· The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic emblems
· The words ‘London 2012’ and ‘2012’ or MMXII
· The words ‘Olympic’, ‘Olympiad’, ‘Olympian’ (and their plurals and things very similar to them – eg ‘Olympix’
· The words ‘Paralympic’, ‘Paralympiad’, ‘Paralympian’ and their plurals and things very similar to them – eg ‘Paralympix’
· The Olympic motto: ‘Citius Altius Fortius’ / ‘Faster Higher Stronger’
· The Paralympic motto: ‘Spirit in Motion’
· The Team GB or Paralympics logo
· The British Olympic or Paralympic Association logo
· The words ‘London Games’ or ‘Summer Games’ or ‘Olympic Games’
· The words ‘Gold, Silver or Bronze Medals’
All these words and symbols are protected by an Act of Parliament and we have to abide by this.

What wording can I put on my pennant label?

Please Do label your pennants; we have had approval by LOCOG for the following wording.

"This pennant was made by (name) of (location) (date made) as part of the Quilts 4 London project, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad".

Where can I find more information on using the Brand?

If you wish to gain a fuller understanding of what you are allowed and not allowed to do and the reasons behind this, please follow this link to LOCOG’s own guidelines.
www.london2012.com/about-us/our-brand/fr...-asked-questions.php

However, we would like to warn you that some of what is there may be confusing.
In particular, we would like to explain the following extract:
“However, the value of the brand can also be enhanced by enabling appropriate access to it. We are therefore allowing wide use of our brand by schools who join our Get Set network, by community groups that are running Inspire projects, and also through initiatives such as London 2012 Open Weekend.”
When LOCOG mentions “allowing wide use of our brand”, they are referring to very specific permitted uses of a particular type of branding – not to general use of all the restricted Olympics branding items that are mentioned in our guidelines such as the word ‘Olympics’ or ‘London 2012” or the Olympic rings. Taking Quilts4London as an example, we have been awarded a licence for the project by LOCOG to use the Inspire Mark logo which is a specific type of branding. We are not allowed to use it wherever and whenever we like; we have to get approval in advance from LOCOG for every piece of publicity material where we wish to place the Inspire Mark logo. Only we as the licence holders are allowed to use the Inspire Mark logo, and only for this project, and we cannot pass that right onto you as project participants.
